Character Information
Name: Medli
Series: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Appearance: Like this!
Age: Unclear. Approximately 12.
Canon Point: After Link clears the Dragon Roost Cavern, but before she is awakened as the Sage of Earth
Canon History: Here
Personality:

Having been selected to succeed Prince Komali's grandmother as Valoo's attendant at a young age, Medli had to grow up quickly, and was sort of left spinning her wheels when the elder died before having imparted all of her knowledge to the younger Rito. She can't fly very well yet, and she can't fully understand the Sky Spirit's language, and it's left the young Rito somewhat lacking in confidence.

What Medli lacks in confidence, though, she makes up for in spades by dedication to her duties and the people in her life. Knowing that Komali was very close to his grandmother, she took up the slack in the wake of the elder's passing by watching over him and becoming something of a big sister figure. While she isn't solving her own problems this way, she does try to encourage and instill confidence in others whom she feels need it more.

She has a great sense of respect for others. She speaks in a warm, polite manner to everyone, regardless of age or species. Patience is a virtue which the young Rito definitely has, whether it's dealing with younger people, elders, or an ancient dragon. Despite the odds, she remains a cheerful, warm person.

Medli is something of an overachiever. Despite her young age, she takes her work very seriously and finds herself a little bit anxious if she has free time (which she spends practicing her harp). She will go into dangerous places (like mountain caverns with lava pools and monsters) on her own in order to help others, and yet still finds herself wishing she could do more... which means sometimes she's in over her head, and someone else will have to bail her out. However, she always finds a way to repay any favors done to her, and makes her gratitude for help quite clear. If you assist Medli with anything, you've got a friend for life.

Abilities:

Flight (sort of): Medli's arms can transform into wings. While she can fly with these, she's not old enough to gain mastery over them yet and so can fly either only a short distance upwards, or at a glide. She's also strong enough to carry someone her size or smaller if they hold onto her legs or feet.
Suggested nerfs: Not being strong enough to carry someone? I don't know. Like I said, at this point in time she can't fly all that well, so I don't feel any are really needed yet.

Inventory:
The Rito Harp. Abilities: Can be used to play music, or reflect light. It has another function, too, but Medli doesn't know that yet...

I don't have anything recent. Hit me with that Q&A!

Note: Answers may not be direct. She's still a kid and doesn't understand everything, no matter how hard she tries to keep up with her adult peers.

What’s more important: love or duty?

Ah... well, I'm not worried about things like love right now! But, even if I was... I think my duties as Valoo's attendnant and translator are more important than my own wishes. I'm the only one who can speak for him, after all, and if he had something important to tell people and I wasn't there... what would happen? Ooh, I don't want to think about it...

Is it more important to follow your own code, or the code of an authority above you?

I think it would depend on who the leader is. If they're a nice person, and they help their people and the people like them, yeah, you should listen to them! But if they're mean or evil, you gotta go with your gut! And find someone strong to defeat them!

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

... mmm. I'm not sure. As much as I'd like to learn the great Valoo's language more, it won't be so easy anymore... And I'd like to fly better! But that will come with time and practice, won't it? So I think I'm fine just the way I am, hee hee!

[ Unspoken: she wishes she had the chance to just be a kid, and not have all this pressure on her. But she's proud, and glad to be helpful to her people, so she'll never admit that. ]

Is there anyone whose example you try to follow?

... Miss Rutali. Prince Komali's grandmother. She taught me a lot about what's expected of me, as Valoo's attendant and translator, and about Rito life in general. And she was so kind and warm... I hope I'm carrying on her memory well.

Komali misses her a lot. ... I do too.

(( Komali's grandmother is unnamed by canon, but it didn't feel right to just keep referring to her as "Komali's grandmother". Someone's going to ask a name at some point, why not make it vaguely Zora-related? ))

Do you prefer spending time with many people, a few friends, or by yourself?

Dragon Roost is a small island. And since I can't fly very far, I guess I don't have much choice but to be around others all the time, haha! But I don't mind. My parents have told me that it gets lonely when you're on your own, making deliveries... and being lonely is a sad feeling, right? I'm in no hurry to leave. And I like to be around Prince Komali! But since he's gotten his scale, he seems to want to be on his own more... It's a little sad, but if he's happy, I'm happy for him too!

Do you have any spiritual or religious beliefs? If so, what are they?

I... I don't know what you mean, sorry. [ But if explained to her: ] Oh! I know this much: the lost kingdom they talk about in stories was shaped by the three goddesses: Din, the goddes of power, Nayru, the goddess of wisdom, and Farore, the goddess of courage! And... when they were done shaping the world, there was a sacred treasure left at the spot they departed the world from! ... I don't really know more than that. Sorry. Oh, and up until recently, Prince Komali had another treasure, Din's Pearl, but he gave it to Link cause he needed it for something! Isn't that good of him?

[ The goddesses aren't a spiritual belief in the world of TLOZ. They're fact. ]

Do you think things like art, music, and literature are important? Why or why not?

Hmm... I don't really get all of what you said. But everyone likes music, right? I practice my harp when I'm not busy with other things! And Rito ladies can sing really well. ... I'm not great myself, yet. But I will be one day, I hope!

... Oh! You wanted to know if I thought it was important and why, right? Uh... you know, I've never really thought about it. I guess... I guess people want to see or hear beautiful things in the world? I don't know. It's one of those things that just is, you know?

[ The written word is very uncommon in Wind Waker, and it's all factual accounts, rather than works of fiction. And there's not much in the way of art. ]
